We often check the IP calss of the marine light before buying in order to make sure if that is the right one we needed. Different kind of marine light has different IP mark, such as marine navigation light, marine flood light, marine spotlight, marine led light ect.
So, what does the classification standard of IP protection grade means?

The IP protection grade classifies electrical appliances according to their dust-proof and moisture-proof characteristics. The IP protection level is composed of two numbers. The first number represents the level of the electrical appliance's ability to prevent foreign objects from intruding. The second number represents the degree of airtightness of the electrical appliance against moisture and water intrusion. The larger the two marked numbers, means the greater & higher the protection level.

(A) The first number: the level of anti-solid matter
(1) Protect solid foreign objects with a diameter of 50mm and larger. Protection against objects with large surface areas such as hands (no protection against deliberate intrusion);
(2) Protection against solid foreign objects with a diameter of 12mm and larger. Protect fingers or other objects less than 80mm in length;
(3) Protection against solid foreign objects with a diameter of 2.5mm and larger. Protect tools, metal wires, etc. whose diameter or thickness exceeds 2.5mm;
(4) Protection against solid foreign objects of 1.0mm diameter and larger. Protect metal wires or strips with a thickness greater than 1.0mm;
(5) Protection from dust. It is impossible to completely prevent dust from entering, but the amount of dust entering will not affect the normal operation of the equipment;
(6) Impermeable to dust. No dust enters.

(B) The second number: the level of anti-liquid substances
(1) Protective water droplets (droplets falling vertically);
(2) When the equipment is tilted 15 degrees, protect against water droplets. Water droplets falling vertically should not cause damage;
(3) Protection against splashing water. Water splashing from both sides of the vertical line at an angle of 60 degrees should not cause damage;
(4) Protective water spray. When the equipment is tilted 15 degrees from the normal position, the water directed at the equipment from any direction should not cause damage;
(5) Protection against water jetting. Water jet directed at the equipment from any direction should not cause damage;
(6) Protection against big waves. Large waves or strong water jets entering the equipment should not cause damage;
(7) Protection against flooding. When immersed in water under the defined pressure and time, there should be no intrusion of water that can cause damage;
(8) Protection from flooding. The equipment can be immersed in water for a long time under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
Table: Number meaning table of IP protection level.

Generally speaking, most marine navigation light are IP56, marine flood light and marine spot light are IP56 or IP66, marine led light are IP67.
