On the morning of May 26, both onshore and offshore RMB exchange rates against the US dollar rose sharply, breaking through 7.17 yuan.

Some analysts said that the Trump tariff storm has returned, triggering a sell-off of the US dollar, and the decline in US Treasury bonds and global yields has also dragged down the US dollar trend.

Fan Ruoying, a researcher at the China Banking Research Institute, said that the overall trend of the RMB exchange rate against the US dollar has been strong recently. The main reasons are: First, the phased easing of Sino-US trade relations has eased market concerns about Sino-US trade frictions, and the pressure on the depreciation of the RMB has been released. Second, the weakening of the US dollar has promoted the appreciation of non-US currencies, and the increasing downward pressure on the US economy and the rising risks of US debt have weakened the US dollar. Third, the domestic economic fundamentals are relatively resilient, providing greater support for the RMB.

The China-US tariff negotiations have achieved positive results. Combined with the package of financial policies launched on May 7 to support stable markets and expectations, it is expected that the risk appetite of the domestic market will continue to pick up, and the RMB exchange rate against the US dollar will continue to remain in the range of 7.10-7.3.

Guan Tao, global chief economist of BOC Securities, believes that at present, positive factors such as domestic economic recovery, confidence boost, risk mitigation, and technological empowerment are still accumulating. In addition, my country has advantages such as a super-large market, a complete industrial system, and abundant human resources, as well as long-term planning, scientific regulation, and an effective governance mechanism with top-down coordination, all of which are conducive to providing support for the basic stability of the RMB exchange rate.
