A container ship owned by Maersk, the Maersk Frankfurt, caught fire in the Arabian Sea near Karwar, India.
According to the latest news from the media and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG): The fire on the container ship has lasted for three days and the firefighting operation is still ongoing.

After being delivered by a Japanese shipyard in May this year, the ship called at several domestic ports in June:

Called at Tianjin Port on June 3-4, Dalian Port on June 5-6, Ningbo Port on June 13-15, Qingdao Port on June 16-19, and then called at Malaysian ports before arriving at ports in India and Pakistan.

According to the latest introduction by Manoj Bhatia, Deputy Director of Goa, Indian Coast Guard, "Although the fire has been brought under control, I dare not say that it has been completely extinguished." He added that it may take another day or two to completely extinguish the fire. "Even if it is extinguished, the area is still hot. We have to keep a close eye on it," said Bhatia.

It is reported that the fire has weakened, but the smoke is still there, covering the fire and making firefighting difficult. The fire has spread to the starboard side of the freighter, especially affecting the containers stacked on the lower level.

The ship is reportedly carrying some dangerous goods, but Maersk has not confirmed this detail.

The ship was sailing from Mundra to Colombo at the time of the incident. There were 21 crew members on board, and it was reported that one of the Filipino crew members died in the accident.

Maersk confirmed the situation in its latest statement on social media, "Firefighting is continuing with the support of the Indian Coast Guard. The ship is reportedly in a stable condition. However, it is deeply regrettable that the ship's management has confirmed that one crew member has died. The rest of the crew are safe and sound."

It is reported that the "Maersk Frankfurt" is a 225-meter-long new container ship, delivered in 2024, with a capacity of 5,920 TEU and registered in Panama.

The ship departed from Mundra, India on July 17 and was scheduled to arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka on July 21. This means that the ship has not yet completed its first full cycle mission, that is, the fire accident occurred on its first voyage.

Forwarders and shippers with goods loaded on the ship should pay attention to the damage to the goods and the delay of the ship.
