About 7,400 workers in more than 30 ports on the west coast of Canada, including the Port of Vancouver and Pr!nce Rupert, have been on strike since July 1, demanding higher wages. The strike has been going on for more than a week with no end in sight.

As a result of the strike, vessel cargo handling was suspended and the backlog could be worth as much as $19 billion, a figure that is expected to grow.

The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CM&E) industry body said the strikes were disrupting trade by C$500 million ($377 million) a day;
Economists warn this could lead to disruptions in supply chains, fueling inflation.

The situation in western Canadian ports is grim, with import and export services reported to have stopped, whether by rail or road transport by truck.

In 2022, the throughput of the Port of Vancouver will be 3,557,294TEU, of which 1,844,642TEU will be imported. The throughput of Pr!nce Rupert last year was 1,035,639TEU, of which 535,949TEU was imported.

The two Canadian ports are important to U.S. importers because a significant portion of containerized imports from Vancouver and Pr!nce Rupert are shipped by rail to Chicago and other U.S. destinations.
Rail transport has been severely affected by the strike and it may take weeks or even months to return to normal after the strike ends.

The port strike won't have a major impact on the U.S., but could affect some U.S. retailers who import goods through Canada, with potential knock-on effects on other ports.
