The Maldives Police Department recently issued a notice reminding the public to pay attention to a new type of fraud that is emerging within the country.
The fraud is usually carried out by an unidentified third party intermediary. The way of committing the fraud is complex, involving false cryptocurrency transactions, and is mainly aimed at foreigners, especially Chinese citizens.
The following is a detailed explanation of the modus operandi:
1. Scammers contact local USDT sellers through online platforms, claiming to need assistance with currency exchange transactions and providing a cryptocurrency wallet address, requesting the seller to transfer USDT to that address.
2. Scammers contact Chinese citizens who hold a large amount of MVR cash and arrange for them to meet with Tether sellers.
In face-to-face transactions, Chinese citizens hand over Lufia cash to Tether sellers. After receiving the cash, the seller immediately transfers the corresponding amount of Tether coins to the encrypted wallet address provided by the fraudster according to their instructions.
After the transaction was completed, the bank account of the Chinese citizen did not receive any foreign currency, and the seller of Tether was unable to contact the intermediary. Due to mutual ignorance, both parties believed that the other was a fraudster, but in reality, the fraudster had fled with the money.
The Ma police stated that such scams are highly deceptive and covert, making it difficult to prevent. Therefore, they solemnly remind all residents and foreign tourists:
1. Don't trust third-party intermediaries easily.
Any financial transaction, especially cryptocurrency or foreign currency exchange, should be directly communicated with the counterparty and avoid going through unidentified intermediaries.
2. Confirm the identity of the transaction partner.
Before making a transaction, please verify the other party's true identity information to ensure that both parties are trustworthy.
3. Be wary of unusual transfer methods.
Do not transfer funds or cryptocurrencies to accounts or wallet addresses that do not match those of the on-site traders.
4. If there is any suspicious situation, immediately report to the police.
If you discover similar fraud or suspect that you may become a victim, please immediately call the 24-hour hotline 119 of the Ma Police Department or go to the nearest police station to report the case.
Ma police are actively investigating such cases and striving to trace the relevant suspects. At the same time, we call on the general public to help spread this information and prevent more people from being deceived.
