The two largest unions in Spain, CCOO and UGT, recently announced that Spanish truck and bus drivers will start a series of strikes on October 28, and the number of strikers may reach 500,000.
Last year, a month-long strike by truck drivers almost brought Spain's supply chain to a standstill, causing food shortages, rising inflation, and a blow to economic growth.
According to representatives of Spain's two largest unions, CCOO and UGT, if their demands are not met, drivers will strike on October 28, November 11, November 28, November 29, December 5 and December 9, and plan to strike indefinitely from December 23.
There are about 250,000 salaried truck drivers in Spain, but unions expect that self-employed drivers will also join the strike, which could increase to 500,000. Overall, 70% of employees in the industry are represented by UGT or CCOO.
The unions are demanding improved working conditions for drivers, especially the retirement age (currently 67) and partial retirement rights to match the same conditions as other high-risk jobs. Diego Buenestado, UGT Secretary of Highways and Urban Transport, said: "Age is a decisive factor affecting drivers' motor skills, sensory and cognitive abilities, which not only poses a risk to the driver himself, but also poses a potential threat to other members of the public."
This strike may once again affect Spain's supply chain and economy. The union called on the government and relevant departments to take the drivers' demands seriously to avoid more social and economic impacts.
Analysis predicts that this strike will not only affect the drivers' working rights and safety, but will also have a significant impact on Spain's logistics, transportation and even the national economy.
During the strike, container cargo transportation in and out of the country's ports may be affected.
